Attorney Janice Alfred Breaks Down Fathers’ Rights, Legitimation & Family Law in Georgia

On a powerful episode of Voices of the Village Podcast, Game Changers Media Network sat down with Attorney Janice Alfred of South Atlanta Family Law to discuss one of the most emotional and misunderstood issues impacting families across Georgia: fathers’ rights, legitimation, custody, child support, and family court realities.

Hosted by Andreal Mallard Sr., the conversation pulled back the curtain on what many fathers face when attempting to gain legal rights to their children in Georgia and why understanding the law is critical for both men and women navigating co-parenting situations.

Attorney Alfred, who has built her legal career around family law and child advocacy, explained that in Georgia, fathers who are not married to the child’s mother do not automatically have legal rights to the child.

“Unless you are married to the mother, you have to go through the legitimation process,” Alfred explained during the interview. “That process allows fathers to obtain legal rights, visitation rights, decision-making authority, and in some cases even custody.”

The discussion highlighted how many fathers mistakenly believe that signing a birth certificate alone gives them full parental rights. Attorney Alfred clarified that legitimation is often necessary for unmarried fathers to establish themselves legally in the eyes of the court.

The episode also explored difficult realities involving DNA testing, child support, and paternity disputes. Attorney Alfred shared that she has witnessed heartbreaking cases where men spent years financially supporting children they later discovered were not biologically theirs.

“One of the hardest things for men to understand,” Alfred noted, “is that if they voluntarily accepted responsibility and paid child support, the courts generally do not refund that money later.”

The conversation took an honest look at how emotions, relationships, and legal misunderstandings often collide in Georgia family courts. Mallard raised concerns about how many men feel overwhelmed by the system, while Alfred emphasized that the courts ultimately focus on the best interests of the child.

Attorney Alfred also spoke passionately about her personal journey into family law. Originally on a path toward medicine, she later discovered her passion for advocacy after shadowing attorneys and witnessing the realities of cases involving children and family trauma.

“My passion has always been protecting children,” she shared. “I advocate for my clients, but I also advocate for what’s best for the child because children deserve healthy relationships with both parents whenever possible.”

The episode also tackled topics including: Child custody battles, Fathers seeking visitation rights, Protective orders, Domestic violence situations, Co-parenting challenges, Marriage and parental rights, and The role of law enforcement in family disputes. Throughout the discussion, Alfred stressed that every family situation is unique and encouraged fathers to educate themselves early rather than waiting until conflict escalates. The interview reflected the mission of Voices of the Village Podcast creating conversations that educate, empower, and inform the community on issues impacting everyday people.

As family dynamics continue to evolve across Georgia, conversations like these are becoming increasingly important for parents attempting to navigate complicated legal systems while protecting their children and preserving their rights.
