As Georgia approaches a critical election season, one race that directly impacts every household, business, and community is the campaign for the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC). At the center of this conversation is Shelia Edwards, a candidate committed to reshaping how utility services are regulated and delivered across the state.

Appearing on the Voices of the Village Podcast, Edwards laid out a clear, people-first vision rooted in fairness, accountability, and economic relief for Georgia residents.

Understanding the Power Behind the Power

For many Georgians, the Public Service Commission operates behind the scenes. But according to Edwards, its role is anything but minor.

The PSC is responsible for regulating utilities most notably companies like Georgia Power. These decisions directly affect monthly bills, energy access, and long-term infrastructure investments. Yet, Edwards argues the commission has lost sight of its core mission.

“The Public Service Commission has not been doing its job and serving the public it’s been serving Georgia Power.”

Her concern is rooted in what she describes as a pattern of unchecked rate increases that continue to burden everyday citizens.

The Cost of Living Crisis Meets Utility Increases

Georgia families are already navigating rising costs across the board gas, groceries, housing and energy bills are adding fuel to the fire.

Edwards highlights a troubling reality: Seniors forced to choose between medication and electricity, Families facing power shutoffs during extreme weather and Working-class households struggling to keep up with escalating utility costs

“People are fighting to make sure they can meet basic needs… and high utility bills are making that even harder.”

Her stance is firm: no additional rate increases under her watch.

A Call for Accountability and Reform

Edwards is not just critiquing the system she’s offering a strategy for change.

Her plan includes: Blocking excessive rate hikes from major utility providers, Creating support programs for marginalized and struggling communities, Rebalancing the PSC’s priorities to serve citizens, not corporations and Joining reform-minded commissioners to shift decision-making power. She emphasizes the need for a stronger, more independent PSC that challenges decisions instead of “rubber stamping” them.

Energy Equity and Alternative Solutions

Beyond immediate relief, Edwards is also focused on long-term sustainability and innovation.

A major part of her platform is expanding access to renewable energy, particularly solar power.

Currently, Georgia’s solar programs are limited, with restricted participation despite growing demand.

“If people want to utilize solar, they should be allowed to do so… we need to open those opportunities up.”

She envisions a system where: Residents can generate their own energy, Excess energy can be sold back to utility companies and Renewable energy reduces dependency on monopolized power sources

This approach not only promotes affordability but also positions Georgia as a forward-thinking energy leader.

Standing Against Harmful Decisions

Edwards also raised concerns about decisions that extend beyond utility rates specifically those impacting communities and property rights. She referenced a controversial case in Sparta, Georgia, where land held by a Black family for over a century was taken for private development. For Edwards, this represents a broader issue: Lack of community protection, Prioritization of corporate interests And Disregard for generational wealth in underserved areas

Her campaign is rooted in ensuring that policy decisions do not come at the expense of vulnerable communities.

A Defining Moment for Georgia Voters

With early voting beginning in late April and Election Day approaching, Edwards is calling on Georgians to take action.

This election is about more than politics it’s about: Economic fairness, Energy accessibility, Community protection and Government accountability “Utilities should be affordable… and not manipulated by any one group.”

Final Word: Power to the People

Shelia Edwards’ campaign for the Georgia Public Service Commission is grounded in a simple but powerful principle: putting people first. In a time where utility costs are rising and trust in oversight is declining, her message resonates with those seeking real change. As Game Changers Magazine continues to spotlight leaders shaping our communities, one thing is clear this race has the potential to impact every household in Georgia.

The question is: Who will you trust to regulate the power that powers your life?
